ベネッセアートサイト直島
The Art House Project is a series of permanent installations in the Honmura district. Artists transform vacant houses into artworks while taking into consideration the space, history, and memory accumulated at the site. Launched, in 1998, with Kadoya, by Tatsuo Miyajima, the Art House Project is currently comprised of seven sites that are opend to the public. The artist going into the community and establishing permanent works has become a trademark feature of the overall mission of Naoshima’s approach to art. Even a shrine, at the center of the island inhabitants’ beliefs, has become an work of art. At this point, it is no longer acceptable that an artwork exist by itself. Not only have these projects been accepted as part of the regional environment, the local residents have supported them by volunteering to answer visitors’ questions, acting as guides, and managing the artworks. Dynamic new meanings and relationships are created every day as this organic project develops.
「家プロジェクト」は、本村地区を中心に展開されている常設のアートプロジェクト。長く地域社会の中にあって暮らしが営まれ、現在は空き家になった民家を、そこにある空間そのもの、そして積み重なった時間や記憶をも取り込みながら、アーティストが作品化するものです。1998年、宮島達男による「角屋」に始まって、現在まで7軒が制作・公開されていますが、まさに今、人々の生活が営まれているその場所にアーティストたちが分け入り、恒常的に存在し続けることを前提として制作された作品は、直島におけるアートプロジェクトのあり方のメルクマールとなりました。島の信仰の中心となる神社さえもが作品化されている以上、作品が孤立して存在することは、もはや許されません。住民の方々に地域の一員として受け入れていただくばかりでなく、作品を訪ねて集落内を行き来する観客の質問への対応や道案内、作品の管理にいたるまでお手伝いいただくことで、新しい意味や関係が日々ダイナミックに生成される、有機的なプロジェクトへと成長しています。
